Nagpur Witnesses Massive Bike Rally and Signature Campaign Demanding Strict Laws Against Disrespect of Historical Figures
Nagpur, Maharashtra: In a powerful display of unity and determination, members of the Sakal Maratha Samaj, Shivpremi organisations, and citizens of Nagpur gathered today to demand stringent laws against those who disrespect Maharashtra’s revered historical figures. The protest, which included a massive bike rally and a signature campaign, was organised in response to the alleged derogatory remarks made by Prashant Koratkar against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and other historical icons.
The rally began at the Mahal area, where protesters paid their respects to the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivtirth Chowk. The bike rally, which saw hundreds of participants, proceeded through various routes in Nagpur, culminating at Constitution Square. Simultaneously, a signature campaign was launched, urging the state government to enact stricter laws to prevent the disrespect of historical figures.
Outrage Over Disrespect to Mahapurushas
The controversy erupted after Prashant Koratkar was accused of making offensive remarks against historical personalities and threatening historian Indrajit Sawant over the phone. Sawant, a prominent history scholar, filed a police complaint after receiving abusive calls from Koratkar. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among Maratha communities and Shivaji devotees, who have called for immediate legal action against Koratkar.
Protesters at the rally demanded that the police expedite the investigation and ensure Koratkar’s arrest. “We will not tolerate any disrespect towards our great leaders and historical figures. The police must act swiftly and ensure that Prashant Koratkar is arrested at the earliest,” said a representative of the Sakal Maratha Samaj.
Signature Campaign for Stricter Laws
In addition to the bike rally, a signature campaign was initiated at Shivtirth Chowk, where citizens were seen signing petitions demanding stricter laws against those who insult historical figures. Banners and placards were displayed, urging the government to take immediate action.
Amar Kane, a reporter covering the event, noted, “The people of Nagpur are demanding strict laws to ensure that those who disrespect our historical icons face severe consequences. This campaign reflects the collective anger and determination of the citizens.”
Calls for Immediate Arrest and Legal Action
Protesters accused the police of delaying Koratkar’s arrest, alleging that he may be receiving protection from certain individuals. Mudhoji Raje Bhosale, a descendant of the Bhosale dynasty in Vidarbha, also raised concerns about the delay in the investigation. “The person who insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Hindavi Swarajya, must be arrested immediately. If he has disappeared, it suggests a conspiracy by the government,” Bhosale stated.
The Kolhapur Police had earlier registered a case against Koratkar, and the Nagpur Police have now joined the investigation. However, protesters have demanded that the police act impartially and ensure justice is served.
Unified Demand for Justice
The protest saw participation from people of all communities and religions, reflecting a unified demand for justice. “This is not just about one community; it is about protecting our shared heritage. We need strict laws to prevent such incidents in the future,” said a participant at the rally.
As the bike rally concluded at Constitution Square, participants vowed to continue their fight until Koratkar is brought to justice and stricter laws are enacted. The coming days will be crucial as the police intensify their search for the accused and the investigation progresses.
